To Brigham on his birthday

Your eyes
The fuzzy one and the better-but-still-not-perfect one
patched
bespectacled
And yet,
they see a world invisible to others
of soda-tabs in the gutter
dead blowfish in the surf
tree frogs by the side of the path
Everything is beautiful, interesting, worthy to you
I ask God
to let me see what you see

Hi Katie
I just have to say I love reading your blog. You always have such insightful things to say! I don't know if you remeber me, we lived at Radford Court at the same time and Eric was our home teacher.
Oh congrats on the baby girl!

I love it! The picture & the poem are perfect. The glasses give him this super-bright-eyed look - it's hilarious!

Katie, I loved this poem. It is perfectly Brigham.

Every time I read your poem and look at that picture, my eyes fill with tears...I don't want to cry in my office! I hadn't noticed that picture before but it really captures the essence of Brigham - his already huge brown eyes magnified by the glasses and everything about him expressing meekness. I can't exactly put my finger on it, but something in the expression on his face and the position of his body convey the Brigham you'll find at almost any moment of the day - a boy filled with sweetness and no expectations. He's one of my heroes. I love your poem.
